El Camino

Since we moved to Denver, we have been on a quest to find good Mexican food. Because Michael grew up in Texas where good Mexican restaurants are on every corner, he is obviously very picky about what counts as “good” Mexican food. I was spoiled for four years living in Fort Worth where any (ok, almost any) Mexican restaurant is sure to be a hit. We have not been so lucky in Denver. Benny’s is fine. Blue Bonnet Cafe is terrible. El Diablo had bad service and mediocre food.

When it comes to any other type of food, Denver has countless, amazing options, but we seemed to keep striking out when it came to Mexican food. Luckily, we stumbled upon El Camino. I had a wedding dress fitting, so Michael looked up a couple places within walking distance. We thought, maybe this will finally be the one–and it was!

First of all, the location is great. I love 32nd street in the Highlands. There isn’t a patio, but the door and large front windows were open so we could easily see all the cute dogs walking by and the new parents with their babies in strollers. The waitstaff is incredibly laid-back and friendly. They have great specials–we were there on Wine on Wednesday where they offer half price bottles of wine which we will definitely partake in next time!

Now, of course to the most important thing–the food. We ordered a bowl of queso that comes with ground beef, cilantro they grow on their own roof, and jalapenos on the side that you can add. The bowl was large enough to feed six people, but we had no trouble finishing off the bowl ourselves. Michael ordered the smuggler’s burrito smothered with green chile and cheese, and I ordered enchiladas (chicken, cheese, and beef) with jalapeno mushroom sauce. We were both pleasantly surprised with how great our food was. It tasted fresh, unique, and real. We are so thankful we finally found an amazing Mexican food restaurant in Denver, and I can’t wait to go back to try the margaritas, fajitas, and everything else on the menu! A+

Even though we found one great Mexican food restaurant, we’re still on the lookout for more. What are your favorite places for Mexican food in Denver?
